Lewis women’s tennis duo of juniors Dora Andrejszki and Nora Mindiyarova qualified for ITA Oracle Cup Nationals in Surprise, Ariz. three weeks ago and ended their fall season with a third place finish.

Before coming into the tournament, Andrejszki and Mindiyarova were the number three seed. The pair competed in three games over the weekend, taking them to the third place match-up where they won. This is the second year in a row that the Lewis duo has made it to ITA Nationals and placed third.

The first opponent the Flyers faced was duo Pondusova and Siembab from New York Institute of Technology. Andrejszki and Mindiyarova were able to defeat this pair with scores of 6-1, 4-6 and 1-0.

The next match-up was against Lynn University’s Bigolii and Willig, the tournaments number two seed. It was a tough fought game, but the Flyers fell short 6-3 and 6-4. “There is no easy match, not even easy point,” said Andrejszki on the tournament. The Flyers may have missed their opportunity to make it to the championship match, but they were determined to make the best of their last match and fight for third place.

Northeastern State’s Efimenko and Worden were the final team the Flyers would face at the Oracle Cup. This was the last chance the women had to place in the tournament. “Our loss in the semis was tough, but somehow gave us extra motivation to win our 3rd place match,” said Andrejszki.

Motivation was at an all-time high and helped lead the tennis duo to a victory against Northeastern State, stealing the third place title with final scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

“Nora and I played very well in our last match and won confidently. Even though third place is not what we wanted, we still are proud of what we have done the whole fall season,” said Andrejszki.

The Flyers concluded their fall season and will pick up where they left off in February against Merchyhurst in Pennsylvania.
