Junior Aly Schneider and the rest of the Lewis University women’s volleyball team made great strides in their opening weekend by being ranked in the top 25 teams;,Schneider receiving multiple accolades right off the bat.

The Flyers hosted their annual Flyer Festival as their first tournament of the season. Facing some tough competition, such as the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University, the Flyers only dropped one set on the weekend.

Following some incredible play by the team, the Flyers were ranked as eighth in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Schneider was recognized as the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) offensive player of the week after recording 45 kills for the Flyers. The recognition didn’t stop there as Schneider was also deemed the AVCA national player of the week. “Receiving these awards is a very big honor. I’m very proud of it because I think it is a direct reflection of how hard our whole team has been working and it makes me very excited for what’s in store for this team,” Schneider said on being rewarded with such remarkable honors.

Women’s volleyball also played in the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver, Colo. The competition was tough due to the fact that most of the teams in the tournament were nationally ranked.

The Flyers dropped three matches but were able to pull out a victory against University of Arkansas Fort Smith in three sets.

The Flyers are 5-3 on the season and opened their conference play this weekend at Missouri S&T and Drury University.
